Our young apricot tree developed one flower that fell and now the main stem appears to be dead. There is one strong lateral branch that has leaves but I am concerned thatb the tree will not survive. Should we remove the dead branch?

I'm somewhat confused by your description of the problem - you say the "main stem appears to be dead" but describe a living lateral branch. As the lateral must be coming off the main stem, I can only conclude the main stem isn't, in fact, dead. If you're saying the part of the main stem above this lateral branch is definitely dead, then you should probably remove it - but only if you're absolutely sure it's dead.
