Sandy and well drained. Though here in Arizona we know Lavandula stoechas as Spanish Lavender. What we know as French Lavender, Lavandula dentata, is tolerant of slower drainage, though still not entirely happy with it. In some of the soils in the UK, it might also appreciate some lime.
