Has anybody got wilt?
I ask because i sold a Japanese acer to a guy the other week in perfect health and he brought it back yesterday totally wilted and looking rather sad, someone passing mentioned Spring wilt, but i cant say i've heard of this before...
Anyone?

nor me Steve, we planted some trees last november and have had to water regularly recently you could see the leaves drooping but soon picked up with plenty of water so I think thats the problem maybe he only occasionally gave it a small amount, can you give it tlc and save it ?

I've never heard of spring wilt, but there's definitely something wrong with my acer. I've asked questions about it before, and its now in a really poor state. It came to life after winter really well and had lots of new growth, and now every branch, bar two of them, is dying back from the tip inwards. I don't think its going to make it, as I keep lopping off the dying bits, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Its in shade, watered well and as I say, started growing really well. I only bought it last year, and it seems to be a grafted plant, so I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

Never heard of spring wilt Steve I agree with SBG & Pam he has had somewhere windy and not watered.
Muddw a lot of the Japanese Acers are grafted - this should not cause a problem. What is your soil like and are you sure it isn't in a windy spot?

I've a small Acer dissectum and have it in a pot in a cold greenhouse, we're a windy spot and outside-- even sheltered the leaves go brown and drop off

thank you very much for the answers guys, so i'm not the only one NOT to have heard of Spring wilt then.
As i remember selling the acer to this chap, and as it as appeared to have gone down hill so quickly i hope its not verticillium wilt, only time will tell.

Hi everyone - just got back from Chelsea and thought I would share some received wisdom! An Acer expert nursery suggested that my plant is wilting as the pot it is in is too big. She said that when they are planted into pots which are too big, they put all their effort into growing roots, and die back from the tips as mine is doing. Apparently you should only pot them up one pot size at a time. Don't know how that applies when you plant them in the ground, as clearly you can't restrict the plant at all then, but I'm going to put it in a smaller pot and hope for the best.

I was trying to find out why my acer in a pot, bought last year has suddenly wilted ! The leaves sprouted well and then over night collapsed. It has been watered but it looked as if it hadnt been.
I have other magnificent specimens close by and they are all fine. I have moved it away from the others but Im worried in case what-ever happened to it will spread. What is verticillium wilt ? do I have it in my garden !! Help ! please

check to make sure you dont have vine weevil either, i doubt your acer will have V.wilt as its in a pot and that disease is soil bourne.
