Can anyone identify this tree please? I was told by a lady looking after the garden for the owner, that it was an American Lilac(?) but that it had another 'proper' name.

I've heard it called Calafornian lilac but it is a wonderful specimen

If it's a dark blue (photo might lie!) then it could be Puget Blue. Why does no-one think to sell it for hedging! How funky would a bright blue hedge be!!

I think it is Ceanothus too, what a beauty.I also know it as Califonian lilac.

I forgot to say that I took the photo with my mobile phone, so the colour is not at 'true' as it should be. It really is a vivid blue and stands out beautifully. Thanks for the replies. I believe it came from the Lincoln Show - some years ago I presume.

All good nurseries stock some varieties.

Yes, I've been looking on the internet. However, most suppliers describe them as bushes growing up to 1.5m high, whereas the tree I saw was definitely at least 3m high!

Puget Blue can get quite large if it's in an ideal position, but yes, they are generally a little shorter.

Was driving to the dog walk today and I saw one peeping over the top of a garden fence. It was only half the size of the other one. I think it will be a definite must-have for my garden when I finally manage to sell up and get the bungalow I long for!

Are they blue flowers? In that case it looks like a Ceanothus but I didn't know that they grew so large. It looks beautiful.
