In my experience, if placing a plant grown for the garden in a pond, unpot it, wash off all the compost, and repot it in coarse sand or fine gravel. This won't hurt the ones that can be turned into water plants, and will save you myriad problems with mud, tannin, and algae in the pond!

General garden plants will not grow in a pond. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page click on'P' and then go to pond plants you will find info on plants that can grow in ponds from water lilies, via skunk cabbage to bullrushes. Take the size of your pond into account when adding plants.
