2 gooseberrie plants on my allotment have had no fruit for 2 years they had a dressing of potash in feb ,can you please assist

My gooseberry bush was the same last year but this year has loads of fruit. The only things that I have done differently have been a very liberal application of chicken manure pellets and making sure that it is watered throughout the dry weather.
