Can I cut back my garden ferns in the fall and will they come back smaller?

I have many ferns in my gdn and always wait until early spring and remove all old leaves before the new fronds start unfurling, if you wait too long there is a danger of cutting off the new growth. I suppose you could cut them back in the fall as they can look a bit tatty during the winter months, but wonder if the old leaves protect the new growth during the winter months. spritzhenry is right it will make no difference to the height of the fern.

what canI grow under very tall conifers with very little light ? »
No - sorry! Plants have their own sizes, and we humans can't yet control Nature, although I gather that there's a new product on the way to spray on hedges so that they don't grow so fast!!!
