A friend has given me some seed potatoes, but they have been kept in the dark, and have longish colourless chits. Monty Don said the chits should be green (I think). Given that I am very short of space, and grow potatoes in bags, is it worth using these, is it worth using these, or should I discard them and start afresh?

Your seed potatoes should be fine… yes the sprouted bits should be green but they'll get on and grow anyway.
