Hi I have a few primulas and love them. I dead head them but it looks as if something is eating the petals. I have found occasionally small slugs but not enough to do all the eating that goes on. I could spray but don't want to harm the birds any ideas

Could also be wood lice or the caterpillars of the Angle shade moth. Both have a good chew during the night. Have a good rummage amongst the leaves to see if you can find a caterpillar. The wood lice are only stoppable with bug spray I'm afraid.

Wood lice don't eat live plant material they eat rotting wood. Birds are the most likely cause of pieces missing from the petals - our pretty little song birds ca nbe total vandals.

Yes the birds love them and always pick out the light coloured ones first, they especially like the more expensive new ones purchased this springtime ...Little beggars!!!!!!

That's interesting - its my red ones that disappear from the pots (flowers first,m then leaves) but the one in the ground is flourishing!

Birds could well be the culprits. So sadly not a lot you can do really.
