Another for Owdboggy, what is this the flower it is tiny and on a long stem? Its joined to the leaves in the front and not the campanula behind which is just visable.

Looks like Saxifraga 'Southside Seedling'.

I agree saxifraga but not sure it is 'Southside Seedling' as this has a long arching stem. At least the one's Ian Christie grows do.

How about Saxifrage 'Spotted Dog'?

31 May, 2010

I looked up Southsea and it looks like mine which is on a long stem which bends a bit.
BB I could not get a pic of spotted dog

There are a large number of Saxifrages in this group, you need a magnifying glass and the plant before one can prognosticate!

Thanks OB

Southside Seedling is very distinct. It is very much like the species S. longiflora in appearance, in which the stem is severly bent by the weight of the flowering head, but has the advantage of being perennial rather than monocarpic.

I have had it about 3 years but this is the first year it has flowered so will it die after flowering BB?

If it is one of the cultivars, no it should not die. This is one of the advantages of plant manipulation (poor word but I can't think of a better one!).

The original plant called Southside Seedling has been so frequently grown from seed that no one is completely certain that the original even still exists. What most people have as Southside Seedling should be better called Southside seedling group. Within that group there are quite wide variations in the amount of red spotting on the petals, so much so that one plant can look very different from another, but both be labelled Southside Seedling.

I confess to liking the Silver Saxifrages. I have a decent collection of them, flowering now in red through white to pale yellow.
