what is the best way of ensuring the garden is level, prior to putting grass down?

I can only tell you the preparation you should have done before laying turf - dug the area, removing all perennial weed roots, raked roughly level, trodden down by heeling all over, then lightly turned over again, then a large plank or piece of wood dragged all over to level out (I've even seen someone use a step ladder for this, with strings attached for pulling it along). Leave to settle for a few days, relevel if necessary, checking for soft spots, then turf.

I know - and I've got to do just that in 6 weeks' time after the hard works guys have finished! Still, what don't kill you makes you stronger...

I do hope that it 'does' make you stronger, and not the alternative! ;-/

Gotta look on the bright side - if I did keel over, at least it'd be doing something I love...
