I have bought 3 very cheap tubular metal arches to go against a fence at the bottom of my almost finished newly madeover garden, in order to give extra privacy. The fence is east facing. I would like to plant a wisteria amethyst falls which I already have (let me know if there's a reason not to) I am also desperate for a rose which will flower most of the summer and smell delightfully. I do prefer roses which show anthers, but not too fussy, oh and disease resistance. Any suggestions for anything else gratefully received, if you can tear yourselves away from your gardens! :-)

Sorry to be a pessimist but you say "very cheap" tubular arches. I bought some a couple of years ago and found that just as the roses and other climbers were establishing (about a year later), they simply bent and collapsed. It was a terrible job untwining the roses from the arches and then putting in another support.
If you can easily bend the metal of your tubular arch, put in some stout wooden posts beside it or instead or try to sell your arches to someone you don't particularly like.
In the end it's false economy if a support just fails when there's a slight wind and you lose some precious plants.

Hi Bertie, I haven't actually opened the arch boxes yet, they are Gardmans, but very cheap. I think only thirty odd pounds for the three with delivery. I'll go and open one now and ask Trev who's doing my makeover to have a look too. If need be, he could fix up something. Now what about ideas for climbers? :-)

How about Rosa 'Madame Alfred Carriere' - blush white, beautifully scented and in flower from May to December or Rosa 'Sombreuil' - blush white again, repeat flowering and with a perfume to die for. :-))

If you go to davidaustinroses.com to choice is endless, it will give you a good idea of what would be suitable. I have bought quite a few David Austin Roses but I tend to favour the ramblers, hope this helps happy choosing!
