As a mature specimen I can only imagine that it wasn't happy when it should have been thinking about getting ready for spring. What sort of winter did you have? Was the ground waterlogged for any length of time?

Probably not much you can do to bring it back for this spring but giving it a bit of help with a manure mulch in a few weeks should give it a head start for next year.
