Well the mystery continues. No more holes in the leaves
but lots of brown edges. Whatever it is it does not want
the new leaves, it likes the largest ones.
I may have to set an alarm and go out and have a look
during the night as suggested.

Ifyou mean the leaves have got brown edges, even ones without nibbles out of them, that's shortage of water. I seem to recall you planted it only recently - it will need regular and plentiful supplies of water until its established itself.
