I planted some Photinia Red Robins, some of the new red leaves turned brown and dropped off on 4 bushes, the other 6 were fine, they are in south of france on a watering system, any ideas what happened please?

Is it possible that the four bushes were in a slightly more exposed position and caught by cold winds or sudden temperature drop? Not sure how your weather is over there.
