Yes, it won't completely stop the weeds but it will suppress them.

You CAN spray the weeds with a systemic weedkiller, it's taken in through the leaves, attacks the roots of the weeds and doesn't harm the soil. The problem is if the plants that you want to keep are near the weeds then some of the spray might get on them. You could use one of those gel spot weedkillers or use a paint brush to paint the solution on to the leaves.

Wood chip won't stop deeper rooted weeds coming back though. And if you want to move any plants or put new ones in you may find the wood chip a nuisance?
If you have annual weeds that are flowering now you should remove them asap before they set seed - small ones like speedwell and bittercress are so easy to pull up its easier than spraying them.

How about hoeing? That should help with the small annual weeds leaving the weedkiller for the tough guys.
