sambucus nigra problem

Bought this plant last year and its leaves faded in colour and then dropped. Just a gentle touch would make a leaf detach from the stem. Initially, i wondered if slugs were the problem but found no evidence that this was so. I then wondered if the plant was diseased. I cut it back in the autumn. This year it has grown well in its 'sunny position' pot but now the leaves are beginning to do the same as last year. Any ideas what the problem is?

This sort of problem is often associated with a lack of water. Elders do like a lot of the clear stuf!

check for red spider or other types of mites, perhaps?

I tried one in a sunny position but it died in spite of everything I tried. Two years ago I planted a new one in a semi-shaded place and it is thriving. Maybe yours needs a different place in the garden? I agree with Owdboggy, too, they do seem to need lots of watering.
