Why can't I grow spring onions like the ones I buy - I am a successful vegetable gardener with almost everything else.

Snap. Never managed to even get them to germinate in over 40 years of trying.

I start them inside in March and put them out when germinated in late April. I have sown them directly but nothing grew until the next year and I ended up with random Spring onions in the plot!

My next door neighbour gave me a packet of spring onion seeds last June, asked me if they were too late to grow. I said I'd plant them and see what happens. I planted them in trays, gave him half the plants and we both grew them on in very large pots. I've just harvested mine and they were huge. His are still growing as he's away on holiday.

@Myron - do you think pots are the way to grow them? I used raised beds but they are on a south facing slope, so dry out quickly.

I only planted them in pots because it was the only space that I had available at short notice. I don't usually bother growing much vegetables, just thought I'd plant the (free) seeds that I was given.

Planting them in pots would probably need just as much, or even more watering than if they were planted in a south facing position in the ground. I suppose it depends on your preference.

I can see where your coming from though, as I just dragged the pots around into different positions on my patio now and then. This was more to change the position of the plants I have in pots as they came into flower for a better show.

I sow mine in succession between the toms and cucs in the green house soil. they do really well. I thin regularly and they end up large and quite hot/peppery.
