Being a fly fisherman for trout I have come across its botanical namesake in the woods in the spring and in my readings. By looking a what plants are flowering at a specific time I know what type of fly imitation to use when fishing. This is a herbaceous plant giving you a pretty little spring flower. Personally, I could give you no reason to dig them up although you might have one. By the way, the coloring of the leaves of this plant resemble the coloring of the brook trout hence the origin of the plants name.

They disappear after they've flowered, so I find them very useful, and very pretty in the spring. Up to you really. I have some in a mixed bed, so other plants take over when they're dormant.

for me they are definitely keepers. as said they die away and you can plant other things to flower later next/over them.
