I bought 2 Michaelmas daisies & put them in a pot as I lost the one I planted in the ground last year . They are ok but seem to be lack lustre in their colour.
Do they need full sun? Do they hate their compost ( from a GC bag) or do they hate being in a pot? They're not dying ... just pale & the flowers seem to go off quickly.

Michaelmas Daisies? Surely not, they don't flower till autumn. What colour are they, Fluff? Sure they're not marguerites?

You had better tell mine then Bamboo as they come out in July and by October they have usually finished

Oh blimey have I got it wrong again Bamboo?? They are on my 'a pootle round my garden' blog ... sort of light purple colour. They were fine at first but now they look all washed out. :o(

The pink ones in the blue pots are they perhaps Gazania?

The pink ones are Osteospermums, but I have to say the "michaelmas daisies" do look like some kind of Aster, and they are the right colour, but they're obviously a hybrid Aster which blooms earlier - as you pointed out Drc, July's about the earliest you'd expect asters to bloom normally, and michaelmas daisies come out at Michaelmas...
Had a quick research, this is probably a hybrid from Aster alpinus or tongolensis, both of which flower spring/early summer. Likes sun, neutral to acid soil, don't allow to dry out.

Right I'm going to move it then as it only gets sun in the morning. Thanks for your advice. :o))

Previous question
They prefer full sun in a moist fertile soil, should be ok in containers if they are divided every 2-3 years? I grow mine in the garden where sometimes they are too dry and suffer. Dont forget to feed them.
