Thanks for the replies to my question about Aspidistras. Yes, I do mean Aspidistras. I do have them growing outside in large tubs and also in the ground. They're very hardy and survive snow and ice during the Winter. I also have them growing in Australia where they tolerate dry soil. I think the browning must be due to their age as you say.
