I have grown broad beans for many years and they have always had an attack of black fly at some stage. This year I grew them on an area of ground upon which I sowed some green mature. So far there has been sign of black fly.Is this the result of the green manure?

Possibly though I think unlikely...

If you have some Lemon Balm plants transplant a few
along the rows. Black Fly dont like the smell.
Also pick off the growing tips and burn.

I always pick off the tops, but Thankyou for your tips.I just wondered if the green manure had any effect,or is it just luck, coincidence or the weather?

Probably just luck.

Thanks to Goy I was told you can eat the tops if you take them off before the fly arrives. Steam them-they are very good. You can also eat the whole pods before the beans mature - they taste almost like the beans and you get more food per plant!

I don't think you get more food by removing the immature pods Stera… We pick all of ours as grown pods and freeze what we can't eat there and then this having board beans in late winter, early spring. Mind you now a days you can buy frozen broad beans!

I was watching the moon last night, thinking of Moongrower and her good advice re waxing and waning.

I meant you get more food by as well as the tops eating the whole pods too, because sometimes there aren't as many beans in the pod as you thought. But we don't care for the actual beans anyway and prefer the young pods!

MG you obviously grow huge quantities - we just have a few, simply because they are the first of this year's veg, so make the most of what we have.
