The leaves of my geraniums have been attacked by something but what? There are no slugs or aphids to be seen and it seems that something flew in,nibbled big holes in the plants and disappeared. What could it be?

It could be either geranium bud worms or beetle damage. There are nocturnal beetles that could do this so the actual act would be done while you sleep. You might try an insecticide.
