My lawn is inundated with smallish flying bugs about 3cm. long, they fly just above the grass in huge numbers. When the dew has gone they seem to vanish. The Blackbirds love them. What are they?

I don't know what they are but we have them here in Notts as well. One of my neighbours called them "lawn flies"
