We are just about to buy an old 1930's house which has a large Magnolia tree planted directly outside the french doors, about 15ft in height.Will this damage the house so should we remove completely or just cut hard back ?

Depending on conditions (light,etc.), 15 ft sounds a fair height to me, though
further growth is always a possibility.
If root damage to foundations has not already occurred (or subsidence from water abstraction), then perhaps on-going observation only, is all that is required.
A shame to cut back a lovely tree (yet).
