My Magnolia flowered for the first time in a pot this year and it looked beautiful. When the flowers died and dropped off so did all the leaves !!! It now looks dead... is this normal ?

No, not at all normal.
Have you watered the plant? I would scratch the stem with your fingernail to check if it is green or not. I would also check the root ball in the pot - Vine Weevil larvae likes potted Magnolia.
