Something has happened to my mature hibiscus. Half of the shrub has leaves but the other half has black patches over the branches with patches of moss and no leaves are showing signs of emerging - I snipped a bit off and it looks like dead wood - what can have happened to it?

I don't know. All you can do now is prune off the dead branches and enjoy the rest of the good growth.
