ihave a mature maple tree that is very healthy, however, some years ago, before i moved here, one limb was removed, and since then the squirrels have been chewing away at the wound...there is now a big hole in the trunk, and i would like to staple chicken wire over it, to hopefully prevent further damage...the squirrels seem to chew on it regularly..my question is..should i pack the hole with plastic first, to limit the amount of rain that collects in the hole, or just staple the chicken wire with no filling the hole first,...and what do you think of this idea? got any helpful suggestions?

Red or grey squirrels?
Seems like they're not actually harming the tree - it's healthy and the damage is old, so I'd leave them be.
Red squirrels - be thankful that you have them.
Grey squirrels - well, maybe they're not the pest in Canada that they are over here (officially classed as vermin but some people are happy to have them in their gardens - usually the same people who would scream blue murder if they thought they'd seen a rat.)
