I PLANTED TWO CLEMATIS(SUNSET PERENNIALS) IN MAY ADJACENT TO A TRELLIS. I USED APPROX A 3' WOODEN TROWEL FOR SUPPORT ALONG WITH BREAD TIES. THEY HAVE NOW REACHED THE TOP OF THE WOODEN DOWELS. WHAT NEXT? HOW DO I TRAIN THEM TO CLIMB UP THE TRELLIS? I HAVE BEEN WATERING RELIGIOUSLY.

Clematis are twiners so they do not readily grow on a trellis... you will have to tie them in and provide something like wires for them to twine onto.

I agree, they're just not able to wind onto anything that's over 1cm diameter and not onto a squared trellis type shape/material either.

I put wires on my trellis for them to wind through and continued it up the wall once it had reached the top. I put eye screws that are used for net curtain into the wood of the trellis and bigger ones into the wall and weaved the wire through them in a criss cross pattern. The clematis loves it and only needs occasional help to find its way.

How do I say thanks?
