I have a Sorbus Joseph Rock tree that grows shoots from below ground level and I wish to be able to control this. At the moment all I can do is cut them away but they just reappear and prevent me from putting any other plants around the base. I have put up with the problem for 20 years and the shoots just seem to spread and spread, Can you advise please?

Susckering like this is hard to control. You need to find the point on the roots where the sucker is coming from and trim the sucker back, cutting off part of the root with it. If you leave any of the sucker, it will grow.
