Hi, you take rose cuttings in autumn, select a stem about the thickness of a pencil and cut it off with a straight cut, ( you do this so that you know which way it was growing), if the stem is more than about 2 ft long, you can get possibly 3 cuttings from 1 stem, but make sure that it doesn't get too thin, make an angled cut about 9 inches up the stem, and then another straight cut on the remaining piece of stem, then repeat if the stem is long enough, just remember straightccut bottom, angled cut top, trim off all leaves, and if you're doing thecuttings outside in soil, make a slit about 7 inches deep, and put about 1 inch of sharp sand in the ottom of the slit, then insert the cuttings to about 6 inches, and firm the soil back, if you want to use pots, use deep ones, with loam based compost with added grit for drainage, insert the cuttings to the same depth, water and place in a cold frame, or in a sheltered position outside, the following spring you should see new growth, leave them where they are until autumn, then plant out where you want them to flower, Derek.
