I have a 5 year old Yucca in my garden and a 5 year old Strelitzia in my front room. Both have tripled in size since I bought them but neither of them have yet flowered. When can I expect this?

I did put the strelitzia out for a week or so but then it started pouring with rain for days so I brought it back in. It is on a front window sill which is West facing so gets plenty of sun at this time of year. I have fed it but not very often, does this give you any clues Derek, thanks.

Hi, how long has it been in the same pot?, they should be repotted every other year, using john innes no3, they like full light but shade from hot sun, you can water freely in the growing saeson, but sparingly in winter, feed once a month in the growing season, with a balanced liquid fertilizer, they should be top dressed every year.
If you are already doing these things, then I can't think of any reason for it not flowering, other than it isn't ready yet, Derek.

Thanks. Do you think perhaps it would be happier back outside while the weather is good? I repotted it earlier this year and am feeding it. Maybe, as you say, it is just not ready yet.

Hi, yes I think I would put it outside for the summer, in full sun or partial shade, but sheltered from high winds, bring back inside before any frost, Derek.

Previous question
Hi, there is no definitive answer to this unfortunately, the yucca will start to flower when it has matured enough, then it will flower every year, the Strelitzia could notbe floweringfor a number of reasons, have youbeen feeding it?, if so it might have been overfed, and producing leaves rather than flowers, do you put it outside in summer?, they like full sun or partial shade, or is it in the house all year round?, it could be short of water, or too much, could you tell us how you look after it, Derek.
