I have planted dwarf marigolds, bedding asters and begonias in my borders but the birds keep eating them, can you suggest what I can plant instead, as I do not want to discourage the birds.

has all the plants been eaten. if not try some black cotton or fishing line tied to small sticks just above the plants.
