I cut mine back, in June, immediately after flowering, and it looks very healthy now. I would say, yes , cut yours back now and leave it to it's own devices. It will reward you next spring with a mass of flowers.

If is now "very 'scruffy'." then find its growing point and you will see some small leaves. Cut the rest of the aubrietia off above this point and it will look good next year.
