My rhubarb is affected by a sort of scab on stems . What is it and what can I do about it?

It could be snail damage - they leave long strips of damage all up the stem. If that's it just cut that bit off when you want to use it - the rest of the stem will be OK, though it might be getting a bit stringy by now with all this dry weather. Or if its little lumps like set glue I'm not sure what it is but the same applies.
