I bought an acer 18 months ago and when it had been in the ground about 2 months, the leaves started to go brown and then fell off. It's happened again this year. It's in a part of the garden which gets the sun in morning only. I'm careful not to spray the leaves when watering, so would appreciate any help with what's wrong with it, please.

Sounds like drought - as you mention not spraying the leaves when watering, I can only assume you're watering with one of those hand held "guns" on the end of a hose? If that's what you are doing, waste of time, frankly, quite possibly the worst way to water anything. I have a blog on watering (because so many people get it wrong) - click on my avatar, get to my profile page, select blogs and pick the right one.
