Can I cut them this time of year?

I'm going to disagree with spritz - they should be pruned immediately the flowers fade. If you do it in late winter, you will not get any flowers that year because you will have removed all the new wood that will carry them

Well, Andrew, I just got the info out of a reference book 'cos I can't grow Rhododendrons, so if I were you, la_Juana, I would take Andrew's advice - he DOES grow them!!!

No - only break off the dead buds now, use finger and thumb and take care not to damage the new developing buds - then if it's leggy, you can prune it in late winter.
