I have had a privet hedge surrounding the house for a number of years and suddenly a portion of it has died off and it looks as though it is continuing further any suggestions

no as privet is susceptible to infection. I have blackthorn/hawthorn and another that I cant remember instead making a mixed hedge in that section. The RHS has a list of resistant plants that can be grown in the same spot.

This is typical of honey fungus attack.
Check the RHS website about this problem. I had a problem and I took out all the privet up to 1.5m either side of the dead ones.
