On our shady border that gets trodden on we have perennial violas, bergenia, ivy, foxgloves, geraniums, ferns and smallish rhododendrons. Because of your hedge you may have to choose plants that like dry shady conditions.

How about Choiysia 'Sundance'. This has yellow leaves that are aromatic when crushed (by a football!?!) and white flowers in early summer. No pruning needed unless you want to. Or a hardy Fuchsia such as F. magellanica. This flowers from summer through to October/November. Neither of these will be ruined if some branches are broken off.
