my lovely salix tree has gone completely brown and dried out since I went on holiday. Fine before we left, now completely dead. Same thing happened to the other one 3 years ago. What is it please?

Drought, by the sound of it, though you've not said whether its in a pot or the ground, nor how long its been planted. If its planted in the ground and its been less than 2 years, it would need regular and copious supplies of water - Salix are thirsty plants.
