I live in So. Calif. (Zone 10). About six months ago I planted a healthy 6 inch Virginia Creeper in a 4ft long planter that is 2ft deep. The planter sits on a cement patio next to a blank garage wall that I want to cover. The vine has been trained up the downspout at the end of the wall and has grown clear to the roof line. We turned it so it would grow on the wall and not the roof. It grew another ft and seems to have stopped. Is this because it is starting to go dormant? I didn't expect this in our zone. If this is indeed the case, what else could be planted in the area? The planter has an attached 5ft high trellis. Also, I forgot to mention that this area only gets partial sun until noon and then full shade.

All plants have dormant periods - VC growth is spring and summer so you should expect it to be slowing down now and putting out its show of colour.
How big do you want it to grow? Perhaps putting it in a container is restricting it.
Also it needs occasional pruning to give the best colour.
