I would be grateful to know what this plant is please. It has grown to about 5 ft tall in one year. No flower buds showing - just massive 'trunk' and loads of healthy leaves.

I think this is an Echium! If so, it grows a lot taller than this - up to 12 feet, maybe even taller with its flower spike! Aren't you lucky - it's sheltered there and I'd love one...

I agree with spritz - it's an echium. It makes a basal rosette the first year, a very tall stem covered with blue flowers (and bees) in the second year and then dies have scattered seed about
