i have a new zealand tree fern which i leave out in winter.istuff the crown with straw and so far this has been ok ,but its now june and no fronds have appeared yet,have i lost it,its 10 years old

Quite possibly - you'd probably get away with leaving it out like that most years, but this last winter was very harsh.
