We grew atlantic giant, ghost and lantern varieties last year and all three varieties hugged the ground until they found something to climb. However the atlantic giant cleared our nieghbours fence and lavender bush with ease in a fortnight and its longest arm reached over 15feet from where it was actually planted. The lantern and ghost only reached half of that. Hope this helps

Pumpkins take up a huge amount of space but you can train them up a strong trellis or wigwam if you pinch out the sideshoots you don't want and a few leaves after each fruit has formed. But you would need to support the fruit of the large pumpkins as they'd fall off the vine before they ripen.
