Moving conifers....

I have about 6 dwarf conifers on my rockery at home. They've been there for 15 years and despite only being 12" tall, they're spreading sidewards and taking up a bit too much room. They are Picea, Cryptomeria and Chamacyparis.

What do you think of their chances......they're on well drained chalky loam mixed with sand and grit so don't hold much hope of getting a good root ball.

I'd move them in the depths of winter (wet but not frozen ground)

50/50 Badfish - worth a try in winter, rather than just binning them, if you've somewhere else to put them.

well if you have to move them then it is worth the risk. I'd be tempted to move them now rather than winter as the soil is still warm and they have a chance of putting out new roots before the winter. as they will still be taking up water and minerals all through the winter.

How do I say thanks?
