None of our carrots flower and I would be concerned that if they did we would not get a good crop of carrots.

they usually flower in their second year and then die as they are biennials. are they ones you grew last year and left in the ground?

If you walk around countryside that hasn't been sprayed too often, you can see wild carrots flowering everywhere. If you dig up the tiny roots they are white, the original 'carrot' colour, and if you taste them or smell them, they have the same carroty taste. It's amazing the difference plant breeding has made to the original carrot.
I read somewhere that the orange colour was developed in the Netherlands as a tribute to the House of Orange, though it sounds a bit apocryphal to me!

carrotin is a natural dye found in flamingos because of the pink shrimps they eat . i think they probably have a little carrotin in them and mans breeding has put a lot more in after all its made them massivley bigger.if you look at koi carp they used to be commen carp which are generaly browny grey with a touch of a redish hugh . now look after selective breeding .goldfish come from crusean carp again generaly brown with a hint of red .just selective breeding and ornage is a pleasing colour . i guess you eat first with your eyes so it makes sense realy .

Yes, but even the orange carrots have flowered white for me. I have never seen orange carrot flowers. Though they sound like that could be pretty, I would suspect that an orange flower was something quite different, maybe an orange cosmos, or something like it.

you mite be right tug .

Agree Tugb. any carrot I have seen has produced a white flower if allowed to grow on to a 2nd year.

aa word of caution though many plants have a similar flower and leaf form to carrot and are toxic.[hemlock srpings to mind] so make sure of your id first.
The breeding of orange ones in recognition of the House of Orange is well documented. Purple carrots were also grown then too. Carotene is a pigment found in many plants too.
I wonder if the other flowers are one of the achillea [yarrows].
