Hi all I need to pick your brains again. I have an Iceberg climbing rose, climbing up an obelisk, alongside a clematis. The problem is the clematis finishes flowering before the iceberg. I can't seem to get them to flower in sync with each other. So my question is what species of clematis would flower alongside the iceberg through until September/ish? Ideally clematis should reach about 6 to 8 feet

Seaburngirl,
Thank you for that. Zepharine Drouhin one of my favourite roses, alas, I do struggle to look after them. I know they are subject to disease and myself being a complete amateur makes it even more difficult.
I have a variety of roses in my garden which I am very happy with. Intending to give David Austin Nursery another visit in the near future to purchase some more.
I will certainly checkout the Ladybird Johnson though. Thank you so much.
My garden wouldn't look half as nice if it wasn't for the help I get from people like you on GOY.

But by having them flowering at different times you extend the period of interest.

You need to select a viticella variety of clematis - these start flowering end of June/July and go on well into autumn. A lot of these ones get pretty large in a season though, so the following smaller ones might suit: Madame Eduoard Andre (6 feet), Comtesse du Bouchaud (8-12 feet), Victoria (10-16 feet). There may be newer varieties which are smaller - check the prune group or the type (should be prune group 3) and the height before buying though, or you're in danger of smothering the rose. Hagley Hybrid is a smaller one, but unfortunately, its colours fade rapidly in sunlight. All will need pruning back to about 8 inches from the ground by early February each year.
