It's a Begonia for sure but definately not B. rex as they don't tend to have stems but Rhizomes instead.
Could be one of the shrub Begonias but there are thousands and thousands of species.

Sorry Badfish, its definitely Begonia rex - its a houseplant, in my houseplant book, and I've grown this one myself many a time. They get pretty big, fairly insignificant pinkish red flowers, easy to raise cuttings.

Hi, this looks to me like B "thurstonii", can grow to about 6 ft with a spread of 18 inches, but definitely a plant for the home or a warm greenhouse, needing a minimum winter temp of 50f, Derek.

Sorry Bamboo....definately not Rex. Not in my boys book of houseplants but in the memory bank of 32 years looking after exotics, including a massive species Begonia collection....and is ain't B. rex

Well, that is weird - I looked at pics of B. thurstonii, and yes, the leaves and stems are like mine and like the one in the pic above, but there's also a pic of it in flower - unbelievable, nothing like the piddly little things I get on mine. Methinks summat has changed over the years... and my houseplant book isn't that young either.
