On several of my shrubs this year's growth of stems and leaves has obscured the blooms, how can I avoid this please ?

When this happens, usually as the blooming period is coming to its end, you can consider clipping it back. Choisya is one that might do this, Laurel another. I suggest Guest you put the name of the shrub in Google + pruning and see what is advised. A lot of shrubs extend as pollination is concluded. They have their agenda that may not fit in with our wishes.
