Can lemon balm kill skimmia? I had two skimmia side by side and a big lemon balm between them. The first slowly went yellow and died last year and now the older one is going the same way, starting from the side where the lemon balm is. Death comes very slowly. I can't think of any other reason for this sad end to previously flourishing shrubs - the older one is about 10 years old and the younger one was about six.

I can't find anything definite on the relationship between these two plants, but it appears that lemon balm is allelopathic to certain types of seed germination and particular plants (Amaranths, for instance). It's mostly not been tested against a wide range of plants, just against food crops such as pea and safflower.
